Professional Gunsmithing
As of 2023 there were 4,516 gunsmiths employed in the United States, and probably at least that many who are “self-proclaimed” gunsmiths or hobbyists. It is estimated there are 423 million firearms in the United States.
Gunsmiths performing compensated work should be licensed and certified. The license required is a Federal Firearms License, without this, the Gunsmith cannot retain a firearm overnight. A Gunsmith should also be certified or possess a Firearms Technology Degree.
We all know firearms are inherently dangerous, any work or adjustments to them should be done by a qualified Gunsmith to ensure the safety of the end user and any persons nearby.
It is also a good idea for the Gunsmith to be insured.
Design, Function and Repair
Even though the design and function are pretty much the same for all firearms, repair is not. Often, it takes some analyzing and thinking outside the box to trouble shoot and do a repair. It’s not always cut and dry.
Some Gunsmiths can manufacture parts, some just replace parts, depending on the depth of their operation. The more detailed Gunsmiths with machine shops will usually be more expensive due to their overhead, but repairs normally are faster, no waiting on parts.
Guaranteed Work
Gunsmiths should guarantee their work. Mistakes do happen as in any type of repair business. You as the customer should not be responsible for additional charges due to a mistake or accident. All Gunsmiths will make a mistake eventually. It should be a learning experience for the Gunsmith at his/her own cost, not the customer.
