Binary Triggers…Legal or Not?

What is a Binary Trigger?

A Binary Trigger is a type of semi-automatic firearm trigger that fires one round when the trigger is pulled and another when the trigger is released.  This differs from a standard semi-automatic trigger, which only fires a round upon the pull.  Essentially it allows for a higher rate of fire by utilizing both the pull and release action.

Standard Semi-Automatic

In a standard semi-automatic firearm, the trigger is pulled, which releases the hammer, engages the firing pin, and the gun fires one round.  When the trigger is released and reset, the firearm is ready to fire again, but only on the next trigger pull.

Binary Trigger

With a Binary Trigger, the firearm will fire a round upon pulling the trigger and then fire a second round when the trigger is released and resets.  Sometimes referred to as “pull-and-release” triggers.

Safety

Binary Triggers typically have a selector switch allowing users to switch between traditional semi-automatic fire and the binary firing mode.  They also often have a mechanism to safely cancel the second round.

Not a Machine Gun

It’s important to note that binary triggers are not considered machine guns under federal law because they require two separate trigger actions (pull and release) to fire two rounds.  A machine gun fires multiple rounds with a single, continuous trigger pull.

Legal Considerations

While legal at the federal level, some states have restrictions or outright bans on binary triggers.  It’s crucial to check local and state laws before purchasing or using one.
