Firearm Cleaning….Manual vs. Ultrasonic
Cleaning our firearms are important for a couple of reasons.
- Proper function
- Safety
- Prolongs it’s life.
Manual Cleaning
Our firearms can be a major investment. In the Marines the rule of thumb was for every day of firing was 3 days of cleaning. Even if our weapon hadn’t been fired in a while, cleaning was required just because dust and other contaminates in the air would usually stick to the lubricated surfaces, causing a gunky build up. A periodic deep cleaning is advised. Doing this manually wasn’t anybody’s favorite activity. It’s time consuming and messy. Then as you climb over a mound of dirty Q-tips, pipe cleaners and patches, you notice it’s still not totally cleaned.
Ultrasonic Cleaning and Lube
In comes Ultrasonic Cleaning and Lube. The firearm is totally disassembled not just field stripped. All the parts, minus wood stocks of course, are placed into a basket and lowered into a heated cleaning solution. There are 10 transducers in the body of the cleaner that produce ultrasonic waves which create micro bubbles that act like little bombs. They explode on contact and clean the firearm inside and out by cavitation.
After a designated period, the parts are removed and blown dry with an air compressor. They are then returned to the basket and lowered into a lube tank. Each part is then lubed the same way it was cleaned, by cavitation.
Once done in the lube tank, the parts are removed, excess oil is patted off and the parts are set out to dry. The lube turns into a dry protective coating.
Once dry and during reassembly, the critical areas are hand lubed to ensure smooth operation. The firearm is then totally wiped down to remove all fingerprints and contact oils that may be left behind, resulting in a good-looking finish.

Brought in my Bushmaster that my kids and I had put about 500 rounds through. Gene went through it using ultrasonic cleaning and lubricating and I’m very pleased with the result! Ready for another 500!
