History
The M1 Garand is a semiautomatic, gas operated, .30 caliber rifle adopted by the U.S. Army in 1936. It was developed by John C. Garand, a civilian engineer employed at the Springfield Armory, Springfield MA. The Garand was the first semiautomatic military rifle used as a standard combat shoulder weapon. It was the basic U.S. infantry weapon in both World War II and the Korean War. It also saw limited use in early Vietnam.
Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP)
Is a federally chartered, nonprofit corporation that, among other things, instructs U.S. citizens in marksmanship; promotes practice and safety in the use of firearms; and sells surplus Army firearms, ammunition, repair parts and other supplies.
The Army and CMP have established procedures to address federal requirements for the transfer and sale of surplus firearms. Both organizations established procedures to carry out the transfer of surplus Army firearms as identified in a 2016 Memorandum of Understanding and a 2018 Memorandum of Agreement, both between the Army and CMP.
These agreements address the requirements for selling surplus firearms, including an application requiring prospective customers to provide proof of citizenship age, and a check against the National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) system.
CMP certifies each firearm to be an authentic U.S. Government firearm. They are inspected, head spaced, repaired if necessary and test fired for functionality.
Since 1996, the Army has transferred more than 700,000 surplus rifles and handguns to CMP.
Acquiring a Surplus Military Firearm
To purchase directly from CMP a series of documents must be obtained and notarized prior to ordering, it’s a process. You can also search for a Licensed Federal Firearms Dealer for availability.
Extremely Valuable and Highly Sought After
Firearms such as the M1 Garand and the 1911 are extremely valuable and highly sought after. They come in different grades, from display pieces only, to functioning and ready to fire.
I have acquired a couple Springfield M1 Garands recently and expect to get more. Prices vary depending on grade and availability. These rifles are Historic, Legendary and extremely accurate. Sought after by collectors and competitive shooters alike.
