Brownell’s Story

In the early 1900’s, Bob Brownell was a middle- American businessman who owned and managed a gas station and sandwich shop.  He was also a devoted shooter and outdoorsman.  He enjoyed repairing and customizing firearms.

By 1938 his gunsmithing hobby was making a profit so he added a part-time gunsmith to his list of businesses.

As the business grew, so did his need for good quality tools.  He soon found out that some of the most necessary tools were hard to find.  When he did find any, he bought extra to sell to fellow gunsmiths who were also having trouble finding supplies.

First Catalog

Was sent to customers in 1947 displaying his first “motto”, “The First and Only Complete Gunsmiths’ Supply House in the World”.

By 1951 he closed the gunsmithing shop to concentrate full-time on providing supplies to gunsmiths across the United States.

Throughout the 60’s and 70’s Brownell’s added more products and hired more employees and sent out more catalogs.  In 1980 he started entering the gun parts business.

Growth Through The 90’s

Bob passed in 1991 and his son Frank took over.  Frank continued to insist on open, honest, one-on-one customer service.  The growth was tremendous and as a result the company earned its title as “The World’s Largest Supplier of Firearms, Accessories and Gunsmithing Tools” the expansion took them into the area of reloading and long range precision shooting.

In 2011 they added ammunition to their product category.

The company was founded on three words. Selection, Service, and Satisfaction, and provided that for over 75 years.  Now with over 90,000 products.
